YouTube Channel Downloader — Archive an Entire Channel

Archiving an entire YouTube channel — preserving a creator's complete video catalog before the channel closes, gets banned, or content gets deleted — requires a different approach than single video downloading. Here is the complete method using yt-dlp for full channel downloads.

Why Channels Need Archiving

YouTube channels disappear for many reasons: creators retire or pass away, copyright disputes result in termination, policy violations trigger bans, channels are hacked, or creators simply decide to delete everything and start fresh. When a channel with years of valuable content disappears, everything it contained vanishes permanently. Educational channels, historical documentation, creative work from independent artists, and interview archives have all been lost this way. Archiving channels you value while they are active is the only way to ensure the content survives.

Download an Entire YouTube Channel with yt-dlp

yt-dlp handles channel URLs directly. Navigate to the channel you want to archive, copy the channel URL (it will contain /channel/UCxxxxx or /@channelname in the path), and run:

yt-dlp -f "bestvideo[ext=mp4]+bestaudio[ext=m4a]/best[ext=mp4]" --merge-output-format mp4 -o "%(channel)s/%(upload_date)s - %(title)s.%(ext)s" "CHANNEL_URL"

The -o format string organizes downloaded files into a folder named after the channel, with each file named by upload date and title for easy chronological sorting. yt-dlp processes every video on the channel sequentially — a large channel with hundreds of videos may take hours or days to fully archive depending on your connection and the total content size.

Keeping a Channel Archive Updated

Run yt-dlp with the --download-archive archive.txt flag to maintain a record of already-downloaded videos. yt-dlp writes each downloaded video's ID to the archive file and skips any video already in the file on subsequent runs. This means running the same channel download command weekly or monthly only downloads new videos added since the last run, keeping your local archive synchronized with the channel without re-downloading content you already have.

Smaller Collections — dltkk.to Batch Mode

For channels with only a few dozen videos, or when you want specific videos rather than the entire channel, dltkk.to batch mode processes up to 10 videos at once. Go to the channel's Videos tab, manually collect the URLs of the videos you want, paste groups of 10 into dltkk.to batch mode, and download. This manual approach is slower than yt-dlp for large channels but requires no technical setup for users who prefer a browser-based tool.

Storage Planning for Channel Archives

Before archiving a large channel, estimate storage needs. Count the approximate number of videos on the channel and estimate average video length. A channel with 200 videos averaging 20 minutes each at 720p is roughly 200 × 300 MB = 60 GB. At 1080p that doubles to approximately 120 GB. External hard drives are the practical storage solution for channel archives — 4 TB drives are inexpensive and sufficient for most channel archives. Use exFAT formatting for compatibility across Windows and Mac.
